Kansas couple Melvin and Doris Cornelson died within hours each other after 62 years of marriage, reports local news station KWCH. Melvin, 85, suffering from cancer, died with his wife by his side. Hours later, Doris, 80, lay down for a nap and never woke up.

“They never dated anyone else,” the couple’s daughter, Candi Sawatzky, told KWCH. “They’re happy. I know they are.”

The Cornelsons aren’t the first long-married couple to die in close succession. In fact, it’s a surprisingly common phenomenon.

    Cornel, when I was in med school we studied this effect. Spouses who have been together for a long time often pass away in close temporal proximity to one another. It has to do with many factors including bereavement and depression, inability to care for oneself, and many others. That long-term bond in the husband-wife relationship which was put there by God is so deep and strong…
